Cradled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Woodland School was founded by Dr. Nettie Holt, Woodland’s first principal, in 1997 as a public, coeducational, comprehensive school, serving high school-aged students. For a decade, students from Bartow County have been members of the Woodland “family”, partnering in an outstanding educational experience.

Built on a scenic 120-acre campus, bordered by the Etowah River, Woodland’s impressive facilities and wide array of academic, artistic, athletic, and social opportunities are unparalleled. More significant, however, are the cooperative spirit of the school and its long history of inspiring students to take full advantage of their gifts, to grow intellectually, morally, physically, culturally and socially.Woodland graduates are men and women who embody the school’s mission statement:

Boasting a student population of fifteen hundred, Woodland’s pupils have been served by six principals, Dr. Nettie Holt, Jimmy Gainey, Ken Prichard, Brian Newhall, Paul Sabin, Melissa Williams, Wes Dickey and current principal Mr. David Stephenson. Woodland’s faculty and staff consists of 175 goal-oriented, professional educators, including original staff members Karen Russell, Kathi Shedd and Erik Zimmer. Academically, Woodland High School’s goal is to provide every single student with the highest quality educational programs. We feel every student needs a solid academic foundation of college-preparatory classes. We offer a wide array of opportunities for students to develop their concentration, or major, of elective courses while in high school. These opportunities include technical-career preparatory programs, performing and visual arts, as well as the option to specialize in a specific area of interest (science, for example). For students who want and/or need a higher challenge, we offer an Advanced Placement Course of Studies for students in grades 11 and 12, along with Pre-AP classes in grades 9 and 10 to get the underclassmen ready for the actual AP courses taken later in high school.

Woodland ‘s athletic program is an integral part of school life. Competing in the Georgia High School Association’s Class 5A, Woodland fields varsity teams in 10 sports for boys: Cross Country, Football, Basketball, Swimming and Diving, Wrestling, Baseball, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, and Track and Field. There are also 10 sports for girls: Cheerleading, Cross Country, Softball, Volleyball, Basketball, Swimming and Diving, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, and Track and Field. Woodland also competes at the junior varsity and freshmen level in many sports. Woodland’s teams are perennially competitive and have won multiple region titles in a multitude of sports and State Championships in Wrestling, Competition Cheerleading and Girls Cross Country.

Woodland’s performing arts department mission is to be a dynamic leader in the production and development of educational theatre in the Southeast. We passionately connect our students and audiences to accessible and relevant plays. We also cultivate diverse, new artists and audiences for contemporary theatre through innovative artistic development, education and outreach programs. Students in the theatre program are exposed to all areas of study including design and aesthetics, history, literature, management performance and the acting process. As they prepare for continuing study in undergraduate programs, the education they participate in develops life skills of self-discipline, personal responsibility and organization.
